Taeuber, Irene B.

Taeuber, Irene B.
(1906-74)
An American statistician and demographer who nurtured the development of demography within sociology, especially in the 1930s and 1940s, and was the premier editor of Population Index. A feminist and humanist, she was nevertheless committed to the ideal of scientific objectivity. Taeuber is well-known for her important international population studies, particularly her demographic work in East and South-east Asia. The Population of Japan (1958), a demographic survey of Japan from the start of the literate period until 1955, was her magnum opus.
